FAQ With Pastor Paul

Category: Pastor's Q&A

In my sermon on Sunday I suggested that the life of John Bunyan, particularly with respect to the partnership of the Word and Spirit so evident in his autobiography, could provide useful resources for us in the present conflict surrounding the charismatic gifts.  That prompted the following question and response which I thought might prove useful to a wider audience. Question:  (This question has been edited for length and to provide anonymity)  As a 'reticent' cessationist,...keep reading»»

Pastor Blast: Education Options

Category: Pastor's Q&A

Over the last several years I have often been asked my views on the education of children. The Bible does not mandate any particular approach. There is no verse in the Bible that says: “Thou shalt send thy kids to Christian School”, nor is there a verse stating: “Those who love the lost must send their kids to public school.” Deciding on an educational approach for your family is a very important and very personal decision.  There is no “one size fits all” approach. As many of you will...keep reading»»

The Most Frequently Asked Question

Category: Pastor's Q&A

Earlier today I met with one of our interns to discuss a project I have assigned. I have asked Ryan Shevalier to create a searchable mechanism for organizing my many FAQ e-mails. Not all of those emails show up as blogs or FAQ blasts but the task was motivated by a startlingly obvious observation: Certain questions are asked very frequently. One shouldn’t be surprised that certain “FAQs” are indeed FREQUENTLY ASKED but the pattern is somewhat interesting. As Ryan has begun to organize the blog...keep reading»»

FAQ With Pastor Paul - Election #6

Category: Pastor's Q&A

Question: Doesn’t the Bible say that God wills for all people to be saved? Answer: The Bible does seem to say something like that in 1 Timothy 2:4: 1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to...keep reading»»

FAQ With Pastor Paul - Election #5

Category: Pastor's Q&A

Question:  Does God choose us on the basis of his foreknowledge that we will choose him? Answer: This question cuts to the very heart of the great in-house Evangelical debate.  Classical Arminian Evangelical theology (think John Wesley and the Methodists) teaches that God elects people on the basis of his foreknowledge of their future faith.  God looks into the future and sees that a certain person will respond to him in faith and therefore on the basis of that foreknowledge...keep reading»»

Question: Even if the Bible teaches the doctrine of election, shouldn’t we keep it on the down-low?  Wouldn’t people become lazy and sloppy if they knew they were elect? Answer: The answer to this question is that, no, the doctrine of election should never result in one becoming more lazy or sloppy. This mistaken idea is probably the result of confusion between election and fatalism. Pastor Paul has already responded to this confusion in both his most recent sermon on election (May 12),...keep reading»»

(Editor's Note: Today's FAQ is answered by Ryan Shevalier. Ryan is one of our interns this summer and is currently enrolled at Briercrest College where he is working towards his B.A. in Biblical Studies.) Question: If only the elect can respond to the Gospel, why do we preach the Gospel to all people?  Should we? Answer: The simple answer to this question is yes, we must preach the Gospel to all people. This is because we do not know who the elect are, thus making it impossible to...keep reading»»
