Mark 1 Mark’s gospel is an announcement of the identity and mission of Jesus. He tells us straight up that Jesus is the Son of God. This is the good news that God has sent his Son into the world as our substitute to suffer and die for our sins. This key verse captures the mission of Jesus, For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 ESV) From the outset, Mark establishes the identity of Jesus Christ...keep reading»»

Jeremiah 10 In this chapter, Jeremiah both confronts idolatry and lifts God up as the only God worthy of worship. He does not seem to be very gentle on the polemic against the idolatry of the nations and Israel who is dabbling with idols as well. But often we look so much at the reason not to follow idols that we neglect to first observe why they are so enticing in the first place. Perhaps if we knew what was so attracting about them then we could more easily recognize when we were being...keep reading»»

Jeremiah 8 Jeremiah 8 contains an enormous warning for God’s people. It is particularly relevant to our North American context. Consider the description of the people of Judah found here: They are under God’s judgement because they are backslidden (v5). The faith that was alive and strong in previous generations has all but disappeared and religion has become a meaningless, passionless charade. Keep reading...keep reading»»

Jeremiah 3 Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, helps us see sin and its effects more vividly. And in so doing, the depth of our own sin without the grace of God is shown through the story of Israel’s rebellion. In this chapter, we are confronted with the imagery of God’s beloved people prostituting themselves. Deceived into thinking that they would find better loves, they abandoned God. But instead of finding a more favourable spouse, they ended up on the street corner offering themselves to anyone...keep reading»»

Matthew 15 In Matthew 15 we see Jesus confronting the Jews, teaching his disciples and ministering to the needy. Jesus rebuked his hypocritical accusers with the sword of truth, and extended mercy to the lost with displays of his power.   A coalition of Jewish leaders from Jerusalem came to confront Jesus about his disciples’ lack of observance of ceremonial laws, particularly, washing before eating. (This hand washing activity was not a part of Moses’ Law, but strictly a human...keep reading»»

Matthew 10 Matthew 9:35-11:1 records the second major teaching discourse in the Gospel of Matthew. The first, of course, was the Sermon on the Mount found in 5:1-7:29. This second discourse is comprised of Jesus’ instructions and admonitions in regards to the mission of the Apostles. While these instructions were given specifically to the Apostles at a certain time in the ministry of Jesus, the words nevertheless counsel us in our day as well. Noting the context of their initial address is,...keep reading»»

Isaiah 60 As I reflect on Isaiah, I’m reminded of how important it is that we constantly encourage one another to look beyond our present circumstances. Here is a prophet who encouraged his people to look beyond the Assyrian invasion to God’s deliverance. He then directed them to look beyond the Babylonian captivity to God’s rescue through Cyrus. He then pointed even further to a coming, suffering servant who would atone for the sin of God’s people. And now, finally, he introduces the...keep reading»»

Isaiah 55 The most distinguishing mark of a redeemed person is grateful, willing obedience. In bondage, there is an inability to do anything but what the slave master desires. But when someone is delivered from being hopelessly enslaved, cursed, and impoverished, the freedom opens the way to a response.  Throughout the book of Isaiah, we have seen the judgment of Israel both physically and spiritually into the hands of their enemy because of their rebellion against God. Then Isaiah tells...keep reading»»

Matthew 1 In Matthew 1, the first book of the New Testament, we find out where Jesus came from and why he came. Much of this chapter is about Jesus’ family tree (1:1-17). Admittedly, persisting through names in genealogies in the Bible requires discipline. There is really good fruit here for us to harvest if we will be attentive to the text.  Be assured, this chapter is really important. It connects Jesus to the redemptive story of the Old Testament. He is the Son of Promise given to...keep reading»»

Revelation 18 Chapter 18 of Revelation continues the proclamation of judgement begun in the previous chapter. An angel announces that Babylon has fallen, and God’s people rejoice at this news. The original readers of this text would have known that these words were not written about the Babylon long since destroyed, but would have understood Babylon as a reference to the Roman empire (see also 1 Pet 5:13).  These words, however, are directed not only to historic Rome, but extend into the...keep reading»»
