Revelation 4 Revelation 3 concludes Jesus’ speeches to the churches and in chapter 4 we are treated to a peek into the throne room of Heaven.  Now, we have to remember that much of what we read in this book deals in word pictures.  John is describing what he sees, when allowed, to tell us something.  Revelation is filled with dramatic imagery and while John literally describes things, those things also have symbolic meaning.  At first read, we can say, “WOW!”  The...keep reading»»

Isaiah 32 One of the things that strikes me as I study God’s Word each day is how often hope and destruction are presented side by side. Take, for example, Isaiah 32. This is the first chapter since Isaiah 28 which has not started with the word “Woe.” The preceding chapters warned of the incoming judgement upon the Southern Kingdom of Israel. Rather than trusting in God, they had placed all their trust in Egypt. Their foolish leaders had turned their hearts from the Lord, and they were about...keep reading»»

Isaiah 19-20 Many view the Old Testament, especially the prophetic books, as repetitively bleak. God’s judgment is made clear upon the nations that would turn away from him. But in the midst of this truth in the prophets, there often abides another theme: God’s promised blessing. In the beginning of our passage, Isaiah makes it clear that God would smite Egypt for its idolatry, arrogance, and worldly wisdom. He would crush this superpower socially, economically, and politically. We even read...keep reading»»

1 Peter 4 The Word of God deals in reality. The Bible is intensely practical. In many parts of the world, being a Christ-follower costs a great deal. How therefore, do we conduct ourselves in a hostile world, when our time here is short, when the end of all things is at hand? As a summary, Peter tells us, ‘with your hand in the hand of God, and trusting in him, continue to do good’ (see verse 19). He gives us three directives: First, believer, do good by living intentionally. We...keep reading»»

James 4 This chapter can be divided into two fairly distinct parts.  The first part flows out of the last chapter and is found in verses 1-12, and the second starts in verse 13 and goes to the end of the chapter.  Let’s start with the first.  It is no coincidence that James heads into this chapter just after he had talked about godly and earthly wisdom.  James talked about earthly wisdom, and here he shows its' outcome: fights and quarrels, pleasure seeking, and evil...keep reading»»

Isaiah 8:1-9:7 There is a wonderful contrast between the two chapters of Isaiah that are before us. Chapter 8 is characterized by darkness. In verse 22 we read, “And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.” (Isaiah 8:22 ESV) The Israelites were facing the threat of a powerful Egyptian army. In their distress, they sought a treaty with the wicked Assyrians. In a time when the Israelites should have...keep reading»»

Hebrews 10 The writer of Hebrews has previously demonstrated how the tabernacle and the law were shadows and types of the better thing to come, and he now turns his attention to the sacrifices. The argument continues that while they had their place at one time, sacrifices were insufficient for actually making the followers perfect before God.  When Jesus came and died, however, there was no need for sacrifices ever again.  Jesus was the one perfect sacrifice made to God on our...keep reading»»

Hebrews 8 Salvation is never about what we’ve done to merit acceptance before a holy God, but rather, about the merits of a perfect Saviour on our behalf. Hebrews 8 tells us of the superiority of the New Covenant inaugurated by Jesus’ superior ministry as our Great High Priest. He is the mediator of a better covenant through his better sacrifice (see 1 Timothy 2:5). He serves in a better sanctuary and brings us better promises (8:8). In Christ, the Old Covenant is obsolete; the glorious New...keep reading»»

Song of Solomon 3 Chapter 3 continues the song about human love written to give us wisdom. At the close of the previous chapter we see that the beloved and lover are mutually adoring one another. The bride now has a dream where she longs for and ends up scouring the streets for her lover. Her desires burned within her and she pursued them. It was not wise nor typical for a woman to be roaming the streets of ancient Israel at night. She would be inviting danger to herself and may well be taken...keep reading»»

Song of Solomon 1 There has been a great deal of discussion within the Christian world about the Divine intention behind the book of the Bible known as “The Song Of Solomon”.  Is it an extended and occasional erotic love poem? Is it an allegory describing the love of Christ for the church?  Is it both? Because I believe in a big God I tend to believe that he is more than capable of doing two things at once.  I think it entirely possible that we are supposed to be thinking about...keep reading»»
