The story of Jacob and Esau is one of those stories that reminds us that the Old Testament is not a story about good guys and bad guys it is a story about bad guys who need Jesus! All four of the major characters share the blame for this decidedly unsavoury narrative. Let us not forget that Esau has already traded his birthright for a bowl of stew back in chapter 25 and has therefore forfeited his right to the privileges of the firstborn.  Read more...keep reading»»

Jesus often entered into contemporary debates within Judaism in order to provide a word of correction or reform, so it is here in Matthew 19. The Jews of Jesus' day had a very loose attitude towards divorce. You can hear that attitude in the words of the question that was posed to Jesus: Keep reading...keep reading»»

Nehemiah 6 is a wonderful reminder that the devil tends to deal in rumour and exaggeration. He is rather like a noisy dog on a chain. He tries to make us afraid and he encourages us to abandon our post but he is not to be listened to. Keep calm and carry on. Perseverance and courage is a form of witness in an uncertain and hostile world. Keep reading...keep reading»»

In Genesis 12, God had promised Abram that he would have an abundance of offspring but as of chapter 16 there has been no movement on this particular front. Sarai remains barren and incapable of having children. Perhaps God needs a little help - after all, God helps those who help themselves, says the Bible NEVER.  Click to keep reading... keep reading»»

Nehemiah 4 is one of my favourite chapters in the Bible. I like Nehemiah. Nehemiah reminds us that a man (or a woman) can be fiercely passionate, deeply believing, courageous and convictional but also wise, hard working, practical and prepared. I've always been suspicious of the "let go and let God" types so Nehemiah is right up my alley. Nowhere in the Bible do we get the idea that faith and work are antagonists.
