Prayer and hearing God's voice

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: My prayer mentor and other "veteran" Christians seem to speak about prayer as a dialogue, but my prayers are definitely a monologue; I speak but God seems pretty quiet.  How can I learn to hear God's voice? ANSWER:  Actually "hearing" God is one of the fundamental privileges of being a Christian.  In the Old Testament, the standard daily prayer was called "The Shema" and a good Jew would have prayed it three times a day.  The word...keep reading»»

Violence & Wrath in the Old Testament

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: I started reading through the Old Testament for the first time and it seems like there is an awful lot of violence and killing.  Jesus was the Prince of Peace so how come the Old Testament is like an R rated movie? ANSWER:  If I had a dollar for every time I have been asked this question, I would have many dollars.  This issue is too complicated for a paragraph long answer, but let me affirm a few things.  First of all, the God of the Old Testament is the same...keep reading»»

Baptism

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: I just recently became a Christian, how long should I wait before I get baptised? ANSWER: Biblically speaking?  About 38 seconds.  Let me show you: Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 'Get up and go towards the south* to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.' (This is a wilderness road.)  So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to...keep reading»»

QUESTION: I have been going to a church pretty regularly for a few years now.  Recently there has been some pressure from the pulpit for people like me to become members.  Is membership really important? ANSWER: Yes.  I used to have teenagers ask me where it says in the Bible that you couldn't make out with a girl in the back seat of a car.  The answer is that the Bible doesn't explicitly say that because the context of the Bible was so different that such a statement...keep reading»»

Belonging to a local church

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: I am a part of a small group with some other ladies and therefore receive an experience of community and some good Bible teaching.  Do I still need to belong to a local church? ANSWER: Yes.  A church is a very unique thing.  It brings together people from a variety of ages, socio-economic perspectives and ethnicities and it forces them to journey and process together.  That is unlike any other form of association in human culture.  Most free associations...keep reading»»

QUESTION: Hello Pastor Paul. I attended this morning's service and really enjoyed your sermon. However when you spoke about being vegetarian/vegan I felt that I should share this video with you.  I have recently become vegan and when people ask me why? Sometimes its hard for me to put it into words so people really understand. So instead of me telling you my personal reasons for making my decision on becoming vegan I'd like you to follow the link below.  I will...keep reading»»

Tithing with an un-believing spouse

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: Hey Paul, I have a question for you in regards to tithing. Here is the scenario; Mom is a believer but does not work outside of the home. Dad is not a believer and provides for the family. Mom feels led to start tithing but it brings tension in the home since Dad is not yet a believer. She is unsure what to do since technically the income is not her own.  What would be your counsel? ANSWER: This actually comes up quite often.  Sometimes you find yourself operating...keep reading»»
