How much should we tithe?

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: I thought the Biblical principle for tithing was 'give as the Lord lays on your heart'?  That's what it says on my offering envelope.  What gives? ANSWER:  This common confusion comes from a passage in the Bible dealing with what scholars call "The Jerusalem Collection."  The text is from 1 Corinthians 9:1-15: Now it is not necessary for me to write you about the ministry to the saints, for I know your eagerness, which is the subject of my boasting...keep reading»»

Tithing to church and charity

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: I give about 5% of my income to my church and then another 5% to other Christian charities.  That counts as tithing right? ANSWER:  I get asked this question A LOT - I was even asked this question a few weeks ago by someone in ministry, so you are in good company.  The short answer is "no" but I'm guessing you want a longer answer than that!  The concept of tithing is part of the covenant of promise, it precedes the giving of the Law to Moses and as...keep reading»»

Receiving the Holy Spirit

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: When does a person receive the Holy Spirit?  At conversion or sometime later? ANSWER:  Both.  There can be a lot of hurt in the church when we are not careful with our words, so let's take our time with this one.  When did the disciples receive the Holy Spirit? If you ask that question to an adult Sunday School class, 9 times out of 10 the answer you will get is "at Pentecost."  But is that true?  Let's take a look at John 20.  This...keep reading»»

Biblical proofs of Spirit indwelling

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: What is the proof, Biblically speaking, that a person has the Holy Spirit within them? ANSWER:  Sometimes this question is asked in a reactionary way, meaning that a person has heard from a well-meaning Christian friend that there are certain "proofs" that are universal in people who have the Holy Spirit within them.  Often the proof being referenced is speaking in tongues.  Let's be clear:  Nowhere in the Bible does it suggest that you have to speak...keep reading»»

Praying in the Spirit

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: What does it mean to "pray in the Spirit"? ANSWER: Wow, this one is complicated but we need to figure it out because praying in the Spirit is a command of the Bible: Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.  (Ephesians 6:18, NRSV) What does the Apostle Paul mean by praying in the Spirit?  Luckily, Paul used this term more than once and by comparing other...keep reading»»

Morning Prayer

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: My prayer mentor is big on "morning prayer" but I'm kind of a night owl.  Is praying in the morning mandatory? ANSWER:  I have discovered that you are what you do.  When I was in youth ministry I worked a lot of late nights and therefore came to think of myself as a night owl.  I got used to going to bed at 12:00 or 1:00 a.m. and waking up at 8:30 a.m.  Prayer at 5:00 a.m. didn't seem to fit into that mix.  I discovered, however, that habits...keep reading»»

QUESTION: I can't seem to pray for much more than 10 minutes. After that, I get bored or just run out of things to say.  What should I do? ANSWER:  I used to have the very same problem.  I would start to pray and I would really want to pray for a long time but after you've told God how thankful you are for a lovely wife, healthy kids, a roof over your head and a hot meal, you move on to your basic needs. You ask for help with finances, a better attitude for your grouchy...keep reading»»
