QUESTION: What happens if a truly saved person, either because of youthful temptations or bad teaching, "turns back" or fails to press forward?  Does lack of forward leaning and progress mean they can't be a Christian ANSWER: I want to handle this one very carefully.  The natural mind, the one you were born with, is oriented in the direction of sin and hostility toward God.  When you welcome the Holy Spirit into your life, when you get saved, you are given a new...keep reading»»

Hungering and seeking after God

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: I am confused about this whole "hungering after God" thing.  Do we hunger after God or does God "hunger after" us?  Who is leaning towards who here?  Who seeks who? ANSWER:  Great question!  The answer is kind of "both/and" but the sequence is wildly important.  Do you remember the story of Zacchaeus?  Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus but he was short so he ran ahead of where Jesus was walking down the road and he...keep reading»»

Christianity and ambition

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: Can a Christian be ambitious?  Can we try to succeed and climb the ladder ANSWER:  The Bible treats some traits with a certain sort of ambivalence, meaning that it is not quite as cut and dry as we might think.  Take jealousy for example.  Most of us would assume that jealousy is always wrong but is it?  Is it wrong for a husband to be jealous if his wife should sleep with another man?  No, I think that is a good type of jealousy.  A man should...keep reading»»

Protesting and civil disobedience

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: 2011 was the year of the Protester.  Can a Christian protest?  Are meekness and civil disobedience mutually exclusive? ANSWER:  Great and timely question!  North America is a funny place to do faith.  Because many of the founding fathers (and mothers) of this land were believers, we tend to feel as though we are owed some sort of Christian government and official endorsement of our beliefs.  It is very common to hear a "Christian" say...keep reading»»

Christians, Wealth & Worldliness

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: What do we make of the Christians who seem to be doing so well and who seem to be "the kings of this world"?  Are they "worldly Christians" or are they horribly deceived? ANSWER:  That is a tough one.  I'm not opposed to wealth per se, and I know there are lots of people in the Bible who did real well in the ways of the world, but I struggle to understand how preachers can talk about how to have our best life now and say that God wants everyone...keep reading»»

Is Wealth a Sin?

Category: Pastor's Q&A

QUESTION: Is it wrong to be prosperous?  Is wealth a sin? ANSWER:  It's hard not to ask that question when you actually read the Bible isn't it?  It's easy to think that maybe what the Bible is saying is that it's good to be poor and bad to be rich.  But I think that is to miss the point.  Jesus does not criticise the man in the parable of the bigger barns for being rich.  He just says: he was rich and he began to get richer.  His essential richness or...keep reading»»

QUESTION: Sometimes in the Bible it sounds like wealth and prosperity are given as blessings to faithful men and women, but listening to Jesus it sounds like wealth can be a terrible barrier in receiving salvation.  Which is it?  Is wealth a blessing or a curse? ANSWER:  Great question!  It is very common to hear people today talk about Christianity as a way of increasing their prosperity.  That is a very old mistake.  In Luke's Gospel there is a story about a...keep reading»»
